Custom expeditions to remote rivers, mountain streams, lakes and the coast, in search of Wolfbarb, Phoenix Barb, mahseer, snakehead, sturgeon, saltwater game fish and species few anglers have seen. For capable fly and lure anglers only.
Into the unknown
Sometimes we want to go into remote jungle and mountains to find and fish for rare or unknown species. Northern Vietnam is home to Wolfbarb, Phoenix Barb, Blue Mahseer, Golden Barb, Vietnamese Mahseer, Chocolate Mahseer and more, in remote mountain streams, rivers and lakes. Some trips also head to the coast for saltwater game fish.
Exploration fishing is not the same as a guided trip, so every trip is unique. The trip and target species are discussed first, and we build a custom plan for each angler. Because we all live, fish and explore together, the price is lower than an average guided trip.
How it works
From Hanoi we travel by sleeper bus overnight, check in at homestays and rent motorbikes or scooters to reach the water. Trips run from a minimum of 3 days / 5 nights, including overnight travel, up to a maximum of 30 days.
We always try to give you the best spots and first casts, but we fish together and share in finding new places and species. Plans can change mid-trip if a location isn't producing or conditions turn (muddy water, flooding, no access).

What you need
To join this trip you need
- A water filter (for example a LifeStraw)
- Hiking or wading boots
- A basic first aid kit (we carry one too)
- Good hiking and wild-water fishing experience
- To be able to swim
- To be able to ride a motorbike or scooter
- To be proficient at lure or fly fishing
- Good physical condition
Many locations are dangerous, with massive boulders, fast water and other hazards. This trip is only for the most capable fly and lure anglers.

What we can't promise
- Good fishing: wild waters can be affected by pollution, overfishing, debris, waterfalls or danger
- That you'll come out unscathed: bruises, slips and cuts are part of it. Your safety is our first priority, and we change plans if a place is too dangerous
- Your target species: we research every trip, but reports are not a guarantee
